Church records in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Ringmer, Sussex, ENGLAND, note that on 27 September 1879 Ambrose MILLER of Ringmer, son of Michael MILLER, labourer, married Elizabeth READING, of Fawley Harnts, daughter of John READING, gardener.

Elizabeth READING was born in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, ENG, abt 7 October 1849. She was baptised on 7 October 1849 in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, ENG, the daughter of John READING, (1815-abt September 1876), & Eliza KEYS (1811-uk).

In the 1871 census Elizabeth Reading is a servant for Herbert William and Marianne Fellowes and she is residing in Rickmansworth Hertfordshire.

After their marriage, the 1881 census has the family residing in one of a series of houses at Cock Road, next to the Cock Inn, in Ringmer, Ambrose, aged 37 a brewer's labourer, and wife Elizabeth aged 31, together with their 8 month old daughter Emily Kate.

Ambrose and Elizabeth had the following children:

i. Emily Kate (1880-) Emily was born in Ringmer, SUSSEX, ENGLAND, abt 5 September 1880. She was baptised at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Ringmer, on 5 September 1880.

ii. Frederick John (1883-) Frederick was born in Ringmer, SUSSEX, ENGLAND abt 1 July 1883. He was baptised at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Ringmer, on 1 July 1883.

iii. Alice Mary (1885-) Alice was born in Ringmer, SUSSEX, ENGLAND, abt 3 May 1885. She was baptised at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Ringmer, on 3 May 1885.

iv. Louisa Elizabeth (1887-) Louisa was born in Ringmer, SUSSEX, ENGLAND, abt Jun 1887. She was baptised at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Ringmer, on 3 July 1887.

v. George Ambrose (1889-1974) George was born on 29 September 1889 in Ringmer, SUSSEX, ENGLAND. He was baptised at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Ringmer, on 12 January 1890. There is quite some time between George's birth as we know it, and his baptism and I am not sure this might be.

The family's baptismal records have Ambrose described as a labourer at the first, second and fifth, a groom at the third and a gardener at the fourth. Family lore is that he worked for the family who resided at "Cadlands House" and as such moved around with the gentleman of the house. This association may explain the time lag between birth and baptism for George?

Later in the 1891 census, the family are living in the middle of one of three properties called "Wellingham Cottage, Clayhill. Ambrose aged 47, labourer in brewhouse, and wife Elizabeth aged 42 laundress, together with their children Emily 10 and Frederick aged 7, Alice aged 6, Louisa aged 3 and George aged 1.

In the 1901 census, residing at one end of three houses called "Uckfield Road" (the three follow the Cock Inn), aged 57 Ambrose's occupation that of a brewer's labourer, and Elizabeth is a laundress working at home of her own account. Aged 51 Elizabeth's, birthplace is given as Bichmansworth Herts she is listed with her husband and son George aged 11 a scholar. The older children are not present.

In various records Elizabeth's place of birth is stated as Bichmansworth or Rickmansworth Hertford. I presume this is the same place.

Date unknown, original is badly damaged

Taken in 1984 when Tom and I visited Ringmer, I understand this house may have been demolished recently - or is about to be demolished (August 2007).

At the time of his son George's marriage in Western Australia in 1913, Ambrose's occupation is that of a gardener.
