Want to know more about my Edington and related Families? |
Margaret Jane (Margot) (Meg) EDINGTON was born in 109 Wishart St, Glasgow, SCOTLAND, on 17 April 1895, the daughter of Edward EDINGTON and Mary Ann Robertson RODGERS. She was my grandmother. On an extract of entry her year of birth is stated to be 1895 but she has crossed out this date noting it as incorrect and should be 1896. I am not sure why she had done this. It may have been for immigration purposes so that she was not over a particular age - who knows now! Sadly, in the census in 1901 she is at 2/98 Garngad Hill, Glasgow, SCOTLAND with her widowed father Edward, and sisters Dinah and Mary Ann. Her surviving baby brother Joseph is living with his grandfather James Edington in Kirkudbright at that time.
In 1922 she and her sister Molly left Southampton England and arrived at Wellington New Zealand. They travelled aboard the "Arawa". Molly was to marry and reside there, with her family for the rest of her life. Meg arrived Australia c1926 from New Zealand and worked in the Blue Mountains, just outside of Sydney, at a guest house where I believe she worked as a book keeper, and later also at Manly on the northern beaches of Sydney. Her old friend "Coops" Fay Cooper with whom she kept in contact for most of her later life was to settle in Manly with her husband Jock so perhaps this was one of the reasons she settled there for a time. On 6 April 1928 when Meg was 32, she married Edgar Ernest ELLIS, aged 45 at Scots Church, corner of Russell and Collins Street, Melbourne, VIC, AUST. She and his sister Molly had met Edgar whilst he was in the AIF in England during the war around 1917-1919. On her marriage certificate she stated her name to be Margot rather than Margaret. She also stated that her occupation was that of a french polisher and book keeper, residing at the Carlyon Hotel Melbourne at that time. I believe she was doing bookwork there. Edgar was a grazier residing at Monomeith in Victoria. My grandfather Edgar Ernest ELLIS was born in Narracan, VIC, AUST, on 4 June 1882, the son of Charles ELLIS (1851-1926) & Sarah Elizabeth HOWLETT (1845-1895). Around 1913, Edgar together with his brothers ran the butcher's shop at Loch in Gippsland. Later he is noted as a grazier in 1917 at Savanake NSW where the Ellis brothers, and sisters, leased Savanake Station for a time. Together they had the following children: On the birth certificate of her son Ian Ellis - her name is given as Margot. Edgar, Margot, Pat and Ian lived at 51 Peel Street Bendigo where the children went to school June 1941. Edgar worked for Alex Scott and Co in Dandenong as a stock and station agent. The family also lived at Mt. Martha and Corryong where I believe he worked for Gippsland and Northern, as the times were tough at "Cropwell". He resided at the homestead at“Cropwell” Deniliquin NSW up to his death in 1968. Edgar Ernest ELLIS died in Deniliquin, NSW, AUST, on 9 April 1968; he was 85. His ashes were buried in Springvale Crematorium, Springvale, VIC, AUST, on 11 April 1968. Some time after my grandfather's death, Meg moved to Cohuna in Victoria, to be nearer her daughter, Pat who with Pat's husband Bill Bray were dairy farming. My parents sold the family property at "Cropwell" and moved to Mt. Martha in Victoria. Meg later moved to Frankston when Pat and Bill also moved to Melbourne to Camberwell. Meg ELLIS died in Camberwell, VIC, AUST, on 10 June 1983; she was 88. Her ashes was buried in Springvale Crematorium, Springvale, VIC, AUST, on 14 June 1983, together with those of her husband, my grandfather Edgar Ellis, and more recently my father Ian Ellis' ashes.
