Edward EDINGTON was born on 11 May 1864 in Little Townhead, Fenwick, Ayr, SCOTLAND, the son of James EDINGTON (1829/1837 - 1906) and James's first wife Ellen HARRAH or O'HARA, (1830/1833 - 1864). He is my great grandfather.
His occupation is given variously as apprentice packing box maker 1886 & 1887, packing box maker 1895, cabinet maker 1928, and packing case maker (journeyman) 1923.
On 18 February 1887 when Edward was 22, he married Mary Ann Robertson RODGERS, the daughter of Daniel RODGERS (abt 1838 - 1879) & Mary Ann McLURKIN (abt 1843 - 1919), at 179 Garngad Hill, Glasgow, SCOTLAND.
Mary Ann Robertson RODGERS was born on 28 August 1867 at 79 Middleton Road, Glasgow, SCOTLAND. From Mary Ann's birth certificate, it is of interest to note that Mary Ann's parents were married in Ireland in 13 June 1859 in Glenwerry, Antrim. In the 1871 Scottish Census of Townhead, Glasgow her parents, Daniel and Mary Ann Rodgers stated they were born in Ireland.
They had at least the following children:
i. Dinah (1886-1955)
ii. Edward (Died as Infant) (1888-1888). Edward was born in 150 Millburn Street, Glasgow, SCOTLAND, on 3 Jun 1888. Edward died in 1888 in District of Dennistoun, County of Lanark, SCOTLAND.
iii. Elizabeth Clark (Died as Infant) (1889-1889). Elizabeth Clark was born in 150 Millburn Street, Glasgow, SCOTLAND, on 24 Sep 1889. Elizabeth Clark died in 1890 in District of St. Rollox, County of Lanark, SCOTLAND, aged 2.
iv. Helen (Died as Infant), (1892-1892). Helen was born in 104 Albert Street, Glasgow, SCOTLAND, on 21 Aug 1892. Helen died in 1892 in District of St. Rollox, County of Lanark, SCOTLAND.
v. Edward Thomas (Died as Infant) (1893-1893). Edward Thomas was born in 109 Wishart Street, Glasgow, SCOTLAND, on 16 Sep 1893. Edward Thomas died in 1893 in District of Dennistoun, County of Lanark, SCOTLAND.
vi. Margaret Jane (Margot or Meg) (1895-1983) who is my grandmother.
vii. Mary Anne (Molly) (1897-1949)
viii. Joseph (Died as Child). (1899-1905). Born on 17 July 1899 in 161 Wishart Street , Glasgow, SCOTLAND. Joseph died in 64 Earlston Avenue , Glasgow, SCOTLAND, on 18 February 1905; he was 5.
Joseph was on the census at Springholm Cottage Urr Kircudbright, SCOTLAND, in 1901 living with his grandfather James Edington, his step grandmother Nicholas Edington (nee Kirk), his aunt Flora Edington, and cousin Ernest Edington. I believe he was living with his grandparents after the death of his mother. Sadly young Joseph died in 64 Earlston Avenue, Glasgow, SCOTLAND, on 18 Feb 1905. The cause of death noted on his death certificate was meningitis and he had tuberculosis.
This photo of the Edington family is from from my grandmother, Meg Ellis' photo collection. I believe pictured are left to right: Dinah, Meg, Edward, Mary, and babe in arms is Molly and was taken around 1898.
Another photo in Meg's collection is this later photo of Dinah, Meg and Molly. Joseph is not pictured. The date is unknown but probably around 1904.
From the various birth, death, marriage and census records it appears that the Edington family lived variously at 161 Wishart Street, 64 Earlston Avenue , 98 Garngad Hill, and 32 Clyde Street in Glasgow.
Mary Ann EDINGTON died on 14 August 1900 at 98 Garngad Hill, Glasgow, SCOTLAND.
This photo is from my grandmother, Meg Ellis' photo collection. The incription on the back of this photo is "Meg's gran abt 1920". I believe this to be Mary Ann Edington's mother Mary Ann Rodgers (nee McLurkin) who died in 1919 as all her other grandmothers died before this date.
Edward EDINGTON died at 32 Clyde Street, Glasgow, SCOTLAND, on 28 November 1923 aged 59 years. He is buried in Glasgow, SCOTLAND.
